Poem: The Corner of Autumn

Something is afoot.
The entire population
of small flying creatures
was in a frenzy today.

Ladybugs crowded the
porch railings
and flew into my glasses;
wasps crashed into
our window screens
and climbed my sleeves.
I saw four red bellied
woodpeckers,
swooping and diving
in and around the Elm tree
at the back door
and my Mockingbird
sat silent on the lilac bush.

Grasshoppers flew;
not from stem to stem
but across the yard,
legs dangling,
wings a blur of motion.
Grasshoppers flew like birds.

Something is afoot
and the creatures and
creation know what it is.
Tonight I light the furnace.
