It is an old, old line, a lyric in more songs than I care to think about.
Life is like a river, ever changing as it flows. We ride with the current or fight against it...our choice. There is a certain amount of trusting in that current and working with the rushing water that makes things more comfortable..more doable.
It does absolutely no good at all to complain about unseen obstacles and whirlpools and floating debris which may sneak up on you and ram the boat. As a matter of fact, the truth of the matter is that complaining saps the energy out of everyone onboard and should be tossed over the side the first time it rears it ugly head. It will lighten the load considerably.
Better to accept the fact that we are being taken somewhere, mostly against our will, and it behoves us to get a good solid seat, take love as our oars, brace ourselves, focus, look ahead and be ready for anything. Keep breathing.
Keep believing in the amazing power of the force that flows beneath and around us. Expect excitement, miracles and disasters, wild fear, amazing courage and endless surprises at every turn, because they will all come, sooner or later and if we pull hard on the oars together, with active, working hope, we will grow stronger and stronger until one day we go flying out into the great beyond.
We can fly down the rapids together, paddling for all we're worth, laughing into the spray, hanging on and trusting, or we can fight that flow, trying to control it, begging to be let out on the bank.
Stay in the boat, buckle in, take a deep breath and rise to meet the challenges that await you.
