Poems: Monarchs on the Move

Monarchs flutter and circle
through leaf drop and fading light;
light as thought,
they turn and tilt, seeking
safe shelter and rest.

Flowers hold no interest now,
they are on pilgrimage.
Flying alone, yet as part
of the great multitude,
they follow invisible paths.

In slow motion, wings
open and close, open, lift
as they settle, one by one,
into hanging clusters
of Halloween hues.
Hoping for a blessing,
I stand below as witness,
silent as they, a prayer
on each shallow breath,
until finally, there,
the delicate touch of
black velvet feet.
