Poem: Sleep

Sleep is a doorway, a gatekeeper.
In sleep we are haunted as well as healed.
Dreams come and go, we stir and startle.
Lives are lost, stars burn out, unnoticed,
insights emerge and gain focus,
the page turns toward tomorrow.

We, as mortal beings, must sleep.
Our body needs down time, stillness,
our brains need quiet and darkness.
We, like other land animals,
must find a safe place and realign.

The wind does not sleep.
The oceans do not sleep.
The earth in all its majesty
continues spinning,
tilting through all of time,
holding us close.
